Personally I’ve taken the approach that a guitar course should cover everything from the basics when you are first starting out through to lead guitar and the various tricks and peculiarities of different styles of music once you become more advanced. It should be in a well laid out sequential fashion to allow you to progress and learn to play properly. Remember, you need to become technically proficient to master the guitar so proper knowledge is essential.

Some covered specific areas well but did not cover the full scope and the ones that did cover the full scope didn’t quite have the edge with the teaching medium.
Make sure you get yourself a course that has good illustrations to provide a good graphical depiction of how to actually execute what is required e.g. play a chord or playing positions.
