Persistence, patience, and unwavering dedication are all ingredients in becoming a great guitar player; if you want to be a rock star, then you’ll need a dash of luck in there too. A close friend keeps reminding me of this article he read out of a guitar magazine several years ago, I fail to remember the name of the magazine and the title of the article, but I remember the gist of it pretty well.

It’s about how one person decides he wants to learn how to play the electric guitar and he only plays the recommended one to two hours per day–and, another person, decides they want to learn to play the electric guitar as well, this person practices eight hours a day. It should be obvious which one becomes better quicker, you have the first person invest one-fourth the time of the second person. So, it will take the first person four years to advance to the level of what the second person will advance to within the very first year.

Of course, many people don’t have that kind of time on their hands, and the ones that do are more than likely no out of high school just yet.

The best way to learn how to play the electric guitar is to simply play, play, and when your fingers start to get sore–play some more.

As for a starting point, the seven major chords along with bar chords are a great place to begin for any person picking up a guitar. With the internet as your resource, you literally have no excuse not to develop the skills you’ll need to become the best guitar player on the face of the planet.

Think about that for a moment, most of your idols didn’t have the internet when they were in their formative years, imagine a world where Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, or Yngwie Malmsteen had grown up with the internet at their ever-so-talented fingertips!

Also, remember some of the greats didn’t receive any recognition their first times around; The Beatles were even turned down when they were just beginning, and there are so many stories just like that out there. Keep at it, and you’ll be rocking before long!
