How To Play Guitar
Fast

It’s the desire of almost
all guitarists to be able to learn how to play guitar fast but
most people find it’s not the simplest thing to accomplish on
their own. Even some very experienced guitarists find it
difficult to just sit down and know how to play blazingly fast
and still manage to sound impressive.
If you’ve ever tried to do
this yourself when you weren’t experienced enough it would have
been quite clear immediately as the sound would just come out
completely mixed up and distorted.
At this point you may be
thinking, “well will I ever be able to learn how to play guitar
fast?” There is however a simple and effective strategy you can
use to get you well on the way to shredding up those
fretboards. The key to this strategy is bearing in mind that
you need to walk before you can run and remember to
persevere.

Firstly, you’ll have to get yourself a metronome. There are
many different varieties but the simplest one to use is a basic
electronic version, which incorporates a little speaker, and
which has a speed or beats per minute (BPM) that you can
increase or decrease by one beat per minute at a
time.
The next step in learning
how to play guitar fast is to start with a straightforward
exercise such as the typical 1234 exercise used for warming up.
This involves playing in sequence the first, then second, then
third and then fourth note on each string, beginning with the
sixth string and then going onto the fifth, fourth, second and
lastly the first string.
Then, instead of playing
these notes just by using down strokes with your pick, you need
to integrate alternative picking. Alternative picking is where
you pick one note with a down stroke, pick the next note with
an upstroke and then alternate doing this backwards and
forwards. This is a very efficient picking technique which is
essential to learn if you want to master how to play guitar
fast.
Begin with the metronome on a reduced setting, for example
about 80 beats per minute, and see how you go. You can then
start slowly increasing the beats per minute as you go
along.
The key to this technique
is that with every tick of the metronome, you should be picking
a note. Do this flawlessly and stick stringently to the
alternative picking, being careful to stay precisely in time
and avoid playing haphazardly. When you reach a point where you
feel that you are confident you can effortlessly pick each note
clearly and exactly at that speed, jot this down in a notebook
and then increase the metronome speed a bit. Keep repeating
this technique again and again and you’ll soon notice that
you’re able to play the notes at a super high speed of 150
beats per minute or greater.
You can then move on to
repeating this technique on any scales you have learnt. By
doing this and using simple, purposeful picking you will find
you’ll easily be well on your way to learning how to play
guitar fast.
