Right, you’ve made the right choice as the acoustic guitar is the right place to start if you’re a beginner. Acoustic guitars are more affordable and far less technical compared to electric or semi acoustic guitars where you will need additional equipment such as amplifiers etc. It is generally accepted that once you master how to play the acoustic guitar you can easily progress onto other guitar types without any problem.

An acoustic guitar is hollow bodied using the body to amplify the sound of the vibrating strings. For your first guitar don’t worry about the technicalities or brand but rather look for something that suits your budget, looks cool and has a low string action to that it is easy to play.

Make sure you do some research into what would suit you.

Get down to your local guitar shop and pick up a number of guitars to get a good feel as to the type of guitar you are comfortable with. Check out the string action by looking at the fretboard from side on to see how close the strings are to it. Press down on the strings to make sure that you can easily push them down with minimal effort. Take advice from the staff as well – trust me, they will be clued up on getting you started out as they’ve been there themselves. Most staff are working there for the love of playing the instrument. Getting you on your way on learning how to play the acoustic guitar will be their top priority.

Also make sure that sure that you are happy with the look of the guitar – you don’t want to fall out of love with your guitar. Check out various guitar magazines and online forums to give you an idea of what you like.

A good place to get stated out is with a decent course. I’ve played the guitar for a number of years now and I would recommend Jamorama. I’ve tried a number of courses and books which have been good but after giving Jamorama a bash I cannot recommend it enough. The content is jam packed and specifically structured to get you playing quickly. There is even a specific Acoustic Guitar section.

You will need to take a look at getting through the following steps to get you started on how to play the acoustic guitar:

  • Tuning your guitar
  • Playing positions
  • How to hold the guitar
  • Holding the pick and strumming
  • Hand positioning and fretting
  • Learning and playing major chords

These will be the basics on how to play the acoustic guitar which are covered in other sections of this website. As mentioned, Jamorama will give explicit detail of these steps as well as excellent video and illustrations to make sure you are doing things correctly. The is even a metronome to teach you to keep timing as well as guitar tuning software to help you to keep your guitar sounding perfect.

The one bit of advice I need to give you is that you should persevere. In the beginning it will sound like you are intentionally trying to drive your family and the neighbors out of town but trust me, you will reach the point where you’ll come to the sudden realization that you’re actually playing. From there things just flow.
