Learning Guitar Chords
Now you’ve got a feel for the basics of the guitar and understand the mechanics to it, the next step will be learning guitar chords.
I need to stress that you won’t get this right the first time so don’t be disheartened if the chords sound reverberated or you have difficulty in being able to form the chords with ease. Learning guitar chords takes time and practice.
As mentioned previously, your fingers will initially hurt as they are not yet toughened up through the constant rubbing of the strings against your finger tips that form calluses that seasoned guitar players have.

I would recommend starting out with warming up your hands. Many people overlook this when learning to play the guitar but it’s very important. Light hand stretches should be done before you ever touch the guitar that will limber up your hands and get blood flowing to the finger tips and encourages flexibility of the fingers to be able to form chords.
When you form the chords ensure that your finger tips are directly behind each fret so that the string is vibrating off the fret and not your finger. Also remember that you don’t have to place excessive pressure on the strings – you’ll be quite surprised how lightly you have to press to get a good sound from the string. Trust me; you’ll save yourself a lot of pain by simply taking it easy on this front.
The first place to start learning guitar chords is with the basic major chords: A, C, D, E and G.
These form the basis for a number of great songs and are the backbone to all music. Get these right and you’ll have the basics down and be proficient enough to play basic rhythm guitar well enough to form a simple song. These will be covered in the next section: Guitar Chords Lessons
Another comment from my side from when I was first learning guitar chords – the G major chord seems unnatural initially. Just keep at it though and you’ll soon get the hang of it.
I can only encourage you to practice and persevere. Ensure you approach practice with regularity rather than having one excessively long session. Repetition will bring results. Effective and quick learning is a skill that will allow you to progress quickly with learning guitar chords. I’d strongly encourage you to get your hands on a guitar course such as Jamorama that will cover this topic in-depth. You will get much quicker results with a structured approach provided by this course.
